SOLIDARITY ON MERSYSIDE AS EVERTON FANS DISPLAY ANTI-THATCHER BANNERS AHEAD OF ARSENAL GAME

By Richard Sharpe
Everton fans showed their solidarity with their Merseyside rivals Liverpool with banners showing their contempt for the late Baroness Thatcher on the eve of her funeral.
The Toffees faithful held a banner during the minutes silence, which was held for the 24th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy and for the victims of the Boston Marathon explosion, which read: 'You took our milk, but you'll never take our pride. Rot in hell Maggie. From the whole of Merseyside.'

The former Conservative Prime Minister was an unpopular figure on Merseyside as many fans hold her responsible for the Hillsborough after the death of 96 Liverpool fans in 1989 as well as her cuts while Education Secretary which saw the abolition of free milk for schoolchildren aged seven to eleven.
On Saturday, Liverpool fans showed their dislike for the former Prime Minister during their game with Reading, they were seen dancing in the Madejski Stadium aisles to celebrate her passing.

The Liverpool supporters chanted: ‘We’ll all do a conga ’cos Maggie is a goner’ before forming a line and dancing in the away end of Reading’s ground.
Large banners were unfurled stating: ‘You didn’t care when you lied – we don’t care you died’ while another read ‘A stroke of good luck’, in reference to the manner of her death last Monday.

A minute’s silence marking the 24th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster was, however, widely respected before the game, which ended in a 0-0 draw.
Last week, Reading chairman John Madejski had last week joined Wigan counterpart Dave Whelan in calling for the FA to instigate a minute’s silence in honour of the late Prime Minister but the calls were rejected.
