Following Margaret Thatcher’s death, critics of the former prime minister have spearheaded a campaign that has seen both Ella Fitzgerald and Judy Garland’s versions of Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead enter the Amazon MP3 download chart top 40.
The song’s chorus line was shared in abundance on Twitter and Facebook today, with some using it to sum up their feelings about Baroness Thatcher’s death.
The former prime minister died at the Ritz hotel in London this morning after suffering a stroke.
A Facebook campaign to get the song to No. 1 upon her death was set up in 2007, and has gained pace in light of the news.
It has been the subject of confusion however after it emerged that Judy Garland’s version is too short to qualify for the UK Top 40 charts, leading organisers to encourage people to buy Ella Fitzgerald’s lengthier rendition.
At the time of writing, Garland’s Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead is at No. 23 in Amazon’s list of the most downloaded singles, ahead of Fitzgerald’s at 31.

Musicians including Mike Skinner, Harry Styles, Geri Halliwell and indie band Blood Red Shoes were all tweeting about Lady Thatcher today, with the tone on Twitter varying between mourning and celebration.
Labour party leader Ed Miliband acknowledged Thatcher’s polarising effect on the British public in a statement which said: ‘The Labour Party disagreed with much of what she did and she will always remain a controversial figure. But we can disagree and also greatly respect her political achievements and her personal strength.
‘She also defined the politics of the 1980s. David Cameron, Nick Clegg and I all grew up in a politics shaped by Lady Thatcher. We took different paths but with her as the crucial figure of that era.
‘She coped with her final, difficult years with dignity and courage. Critics and supporters will remember her in her prime.’
