TEEN GIRLS SUBDUED AFTER STATION ASSAULT

The Public Transport Users’ Association has criticised Metro security officers who restrained two 15-year-old girls on Wednesday afternoon at Flinders Street Station.
The incident shows several staff lying on one of the girls for more than five minutes to subdue her. Both girls sound distressed and scream abuse throughout the incident.
Metro security staff were not trained to deal with the incident properly, PTUA president Tony Morton said.
"These are staff that don’t have the training that police and Protective Service Officers both go through to de-escalate confrontations," Mr Morton said.
"If they’re going to have an enforcement role then they should be receiving the kind of training that we give to PSOs to ensure we don’t escalate potentially violent situations like this."
However, Mr Morton said that "it's quite possible they were responding to violent provocation ... it's a bit disturbing but there's always context in these things that we don’t know about."
While Victoria Police said the incident happened at 4.30pm, the footage – posted on YouTube – gives the time as "about 6.15pm".
It appears to be taking place in the main entrance to the station at the ticket barriers.
The two girls were arrested "after an alleged assault on two Metro authorised officers," a spokeswoman for Victoria Police said.
"Both girls were arrested and released pending summons on assault-related charges."
One of the assaulted male officers, aged 34, was punched in the face and bitten on the leg, she said. The other, a 59-year-old, was spat at.
A spokesman for Metro said "we are conducting a full review of this incident and, as part of that, an assessment will be made as to the approach and actions of our staff, including in respect to Metro procedures".
