PRESS RELEASE – NATIONAL DISTRIBUTION
TERMINALLY ILL ABORIGINAL MAN SENT BACK TO PRISON
FAMILY WANT DIGNITY AND RICHARD BROPHO RELEASED TO FAMILY
Richard Bropho, who was detained for non-payment-of-fines level offences, was taken seriously ill at Cauarina Prison last Tuesday with liver and kidney failure. He was taken to Royal Perth Hospital where the family was told he would not survive the night. However Richard’s health did improve and he has survived the last few days. The doctors have told the family that he is terminally ill but are not sure whether he will last days, weeks or months.
On Sunday the doctors have told the family they are sending him back to prison despite Richard being terminally ill and the Family organising a bail hearing with a Judge at Richard’s Royal Perth Hospital bed on Wednesday 30th January. The family want to care for Richard and spend the last part of his life with him. They want dignity in death and say good bye to their loved one in a culturally appropriate way.
Richard – despite being terminally ill - has been handcuffed to his hospital bed since Tuesday with 3 SERCO guards inside the room and 3 guards outside. The Bropho Family have been frustrated in getting access for the whole family to see Richard in hospital, and frustrated by the Justice system in seeking an emergency meeting with the court to seek his release on bail to the family. Richard has been on remand for minor offences over the last 2 weeks. Before being taken into custody, Richard has been in and out of hospital over the last few months, including being in a coma, and receiving medical attention in ICU.
The Family want Richard released on bail, they want to be shown dignity and respect. Once again the Justice system, through ignoring and totally disregarding what would be culturally appropriate, is seen to be racist towards the Aboriginal community. Ironically this is taking place over the Australian Day weekend where Governments talk is of reconciliation and all cultures working together, yet actions speak louder than words.
The Deaths In Custody Watch Committee want to see an end to discrimination and the inherently racist policies of the West Australian Government towards Aboriginal people where persons in custody are denied culturally appropriate access to family either when themselves terminally ill, or where wishing to attend funerals of family. Efforts to ‘close the gap’ between non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal health outcomes remain farcical where Aboriginal cultural practices continue to be totally discounted by the WA Government.
