THE freight company accused of "killing Christmas" by failing to deliver packages on time has threatened a customer with potential legal action for complaining.
Allied Express, Australia's biggest independent delivery company, has refused to respond to an avalanche of complaints about dismal customer service.
The firm's boss, multimillionaire Sydney racing identity Colin McDowell, has replied to one unhappy customer, threatening to "report" him to the company's lawyers.
Complaints flowed in as families left waiting weeks faced a Christmas without presents.
The Sunday Mail revealed last weekend Allied Express was copping criticism from customers of big retailers who used the delivery company, including Toys 'R' Us, Deals Direct, Big W and Kmart.
Fed-up customers have taken to social media sites and website productreview.com.au with 398 posts rating Allied's service as "terrible".
"Imagine having to tell your four-year-old daughter that Santa hadn't delivered her Christmas present," Chris Walters wrote on Facebook yesterday.
"I had to do that this morning and it broke her heart."
Tom Morley spent almost two weeks searching for his lost packages after he moved to Melbourne this month and had them sent through a company that used Allied.
When he was "ignored and hung up on" by customer service staff, Mr Morley resorted to emailing a complaint directly to Mr McDowell.
Mr Morley said he planned to contact fair trading authorities if the situation was not resolved immediately.
He received a reply from Mr McDowell on Monday blaming him for the delivery failure.
"we(sic) don't want you threatening us," the email says. "did you secure the connote (consignment note) to the item? if you did not and it came off, how do we track and find it . . . and then you blame us."
A second email soon after stated the goods had been found in Melbourne without a consignment note attached.
"So the problem was always yours, we expect an apology but undoubtedly wont(sic) get it," the email stated.
"Maybe we will report to our legal adviser's (sic) for threatening behavior."
