STATE Parliament will investigate the role of the Australian Greens party in The Age's alleged hacking of an ALP electoral database.
Police have charged journalists from the newspaper with gaining unauthorised access to restricted data.
The tabloid reported that three of its journalists - Nick McKenzie, Royce Millar and Ben Schneiders - will face court next month over allegations they illegally accessed and searched the private details of dozens of high-profile Victorians on a Labor database that holds personal information, including political preferences.
The paper also reported that a former Greens City of Melbourne councillor was likely to face a similar charge.
Victoria Police confirmed that two men had so far been charged over the alleged hacking.
The hacking allegedly took place in the lead-up to the 2010 state election at a time the ALP was involved in a bitter fight with the Greens for the inner-Melbourne seats of Brunswick, Northcote, Richmond and Melbourne.
Senior ALP figures were yesterday discussing the likelihood that the matter will be probed by State Parliament's Electoral Matters Committee.
Liberal committee chairman Bernie Finn said it was "highly likely that when justice has run its course the committee will revisit this matter".
Victorian Greens MP Greg Barber said he had been aware of the allegations against the former councillor for "about a year".
The former councillor declined to comment, but the Greens Party later issued a statement.
"As a party we do not condone or encourage unauthorised access of any database," the statement said.
