Is the Gates Foundation Funding Eugenics in Nigeria, or are They Just Not too Bright?
Is the Gates Foundation Funding Eugenics?
That is the question on many acquiring minds today as they examine the practices of the world's largest private benevolent organisation.
There are many people who believe that the money is being funnelled into programs for AIDS and vaccines for polio and measles.
Researchers point out that the Gates foundation is also backing oil companies, drug companies and some of the worst polluters in the DOW 100.
The Gates foundation has refused to answer questions about the investments of over $4 billion which investigators say is invested in programs which are incongruent with the stated aims of the Gates foundation.
Billionaire investor Warren Buffett recently made the biggest philanthropic gift in the history of the world to the Gates foundation.
He has been a mentor and friend Bill Gates for over 20 years and together with Buffett's billions, the Gates foundation now has over $100 billion in its war chest.
Campaigners are concerned that this money will be used for publicly benevolent causes but on the ground, the money could and is being used for nefarious purposes.
Although the Gates foundation has very noble publicly stated goals, its investments in huge polluters, drug companies and other economic sectors.
These companies can have an impact on life expectancy in the Third World areas is giving cause for concern in many circles.
Whiter than white?
For example, its investments in oil companies are leading to asthma and respiratory problems in local populations where rubberstamped approval for oil companies to extract resources was helped by their dealing with the Gates foundation.
In Nigeria for example pollutants have reduced the immunity to polio and measles. This is making parents in the area less willing to vaccinate their children against the conditions which the Gates foundation is explicitly trying to prevent. This is one of the key pieces of evidence which researchers point when they asked the question 'is the Gates foundation funding eugenics?'
Therefore, it is difficult to know how much of the good work the Gates foundation in Nigeria is being offset by the investments it is making in the area which have allowed large oil companies to go in and exploit natural resources.
It isn't impossible to see a situation in which the oil companies, when meeting with government officials, use the Gates foundation as a lever to get into the region to extract the natural resources.
Gates foundation funding eugenics?
As the oil companies get richer, so does the Gates endowment. As yet, no study has been done to see whether the extra profits generated by the oil companies are offset by the extra work that the Gates foundation does in the area with the needy and the poor who must live in a cloud of pollution that is generated partly by the Gates foundation investments.
In terms of ethical investing, it is difficult to make an argument that the Gates foundation is ethical in Nigeria. Perhaps they should draw up a list of acceptable investments from a humanitarian point of view.
If they did, it is very likely that oil companies would appear at the very bottom of this list considering their track record in this field.
Is the Gates foundation funding eugenics? Without more detailed analysis it is very difficult to say for sure but what we can say for certain is that a benevolent organisation like this should not be investing in such an industry has oil extraction.
