MARGARET THATCHER WAS THE GREATEST BRITISH PM SINCE WINSTON CHURCHILL, SAYS JOHN HOWARD

John Howard From: Herald Sun April 10, 2013
Thatcher
Herald Sun
A LITTLE-noted feature of Margaret Thatcher's prime ministership of Britain was her interest in Australia.
She visited us on three occasions as PM, far more than any other occupant of 10 Downing Street. Out of office, she sustained that interest, always attending special events associated with Australia in London.
She has been Britain's greatest prime minister since Winston Churchill. As leader of the Conservative Party in Britain she has been the most successful of all in the past 100 years. It should be remembered that Churchill led a coalition national government during World War II.
The real measure of Margaret Thatcher's greatness was that she brought about profound change domestically and internationally.
The British economy was in a downward spiral when she won office in May 1979; Britons were working a three-day week; uncollected garbage piled up in the streets of London; the all-powerful trade unions effectively ran the country and Britain's influence in world affairs was dwindling rapidly. She changed this by restraining government spending, removing legal privileges enjoyed by the unions, privatising government services and building a society focused on enterprise and effort.
By the simple device of allowing tenants of state-owned houses and flats to buy them, she built a powerful property-owning democracy.
Her determination to keep the Falklands British told the world that although Britain's greatness of the 19th century would never return, it was still a country that would stand up for the rights of those who looked to it for protection and would resist unprovoked aggression.
The most significant transformation in the political architecture of the world, since the end of World War II, has been the collapse of Soviet imperialism, which not only ended the Cold War but dissolved communist domination of millions of people in Eastern Europe. Thatcher's partnership with Ronald Reagan, combined with the moral authority of the Polish-born Pope John Paul II, was instrumental in ending Moscow's hegemony over its then satellite states.
Her single-minded assault on the evils of communism was ridiculed by many on the Left of politics who saw some moral equivalence between the command economies of Eastern Europe and competitive capitalism. When Ronald Reagan famously said to the then Soviet president, "Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall", the same temporisers shuffled their feet in mock embarrassment. Yet both were to be proved right.
The massive increase in American defence spending by the Reagan administration confronted the Soviet Union with the bitter reality that it could no longer match the United States-led West, because it was economically too weak. In other words, the free market capitalism championed by both Thatcher and Reagan had proved too much for the command economies of the Eastern Bloc to match.
Growing hostility within the governing Conservative Party, in 1990, towards Thatcher's opposition to further European integration, was one of the developments that led to her removal as prime minister.
It is ironic that today that same Conservative Party is consumed with debate about Britain's place in Europe. Thatcher's stance has been vindicated. So, far from greater European integration being seen as a panacea to Europe's problems, an increasing number of Britons, in particular, question the wisdom of the European project.
Margaret Thatcher's great political success was due to the strength and directness of her values and principles. She was a conviction politician before that term came into general use. Love her or loathe her people knew where she stood. Her political views were a career expression of her lifetime values. She believed in the strength and resourcefulness of the family; the value of individual effort and ownership; the virtue of hard work bringing its own reward, and the importance of self-reliance.
CONTRARY to popular belief, Margaret Thatcher enjoyed significant support from blue-collar workers in Britain. Otherwise she would never have won three comfortable election victories. Many of her conservative instincts appealed to them, and they admired the way in which she had restored Britain's self-respect and their country's esteem around the world.
The toughest domestic fight Thatcher waged was against the coal mining unions. Earlier disputes of this kind had seen the miners victorious, and the authority of governments flouted. With Thatcher it was different, and the rule of law was upheld.
Not far behind was the epic fight against the print unions at Wapping in the mid-1980s. At a time when Australia has just seen off a bungled government attempt to interfere with the freedom of the press, it is worth recalling how important to the freedom of the press in Britain was the victory at Wapping.
There can be no greater testament to the wisdom of Margaret Thatcher's curbs on the power of trade unions than the decision of her Labour successor, Tony Blair, to keep the changes Thatcher had made. He knew that they had been in the interests of Britain, and he was eternally grateful that she had brought them in.
Several people have asked me what I think of those in Britain who have openly celebrated Margaret Thatcher's death.
My reply has been that it is a commentary not just on their poor taste but, more importantly, a mark of the lasting influence of the late former prime minister.
No one celebrates the death of political figures who have made no impact on the society of which they were part.
John Howard served as prime minister from 1996 to 2007

THE NAKED FACE OF INTOLERANCE

Andrew Bolt Herald Sun & Mikiverse Politics in red. From: Herald Sun April 07, 2013
NGV protest
Protesters jump on Lord Mayor Robert Doyle's car outside the National Gallery of Victoria. Picture: Andrew Tauber Herald Sun
I WAS in the National Gallery of Victoria on Thursday talking with people over drinks when I first saw them at the door.
Sounds quite foreboding doesn't it.
Yes, them -not people, but reduced to an object- the street-fighting goons -In Andrew's fantasy land, lawful protesters are "streetfighting goons"? of a totalitarian movement -That's quite a big lie. There is no totalitarian movement outside of the chartered government business model- whose spiritual leaders are ministers of the Gillard Government.
Can you imagine that Andrew is trying to sell you on the idea that members of Melbourne's Socialist, Green, Anarchist, Union, Occupy, Anti-globalist, Anti-central banking, and other independent political agitators were actually acting under the spiritual leadership of Julia Gillard or Tony Abbot???
This article is already shaping as one for the non-discerning thinker.
They were protesters who'd burst through a gallery entrance and were now trying to push through scared security guards -interesting, unproven claim that is actually an attempt at programming opinion in his direction- defending the entrance to our function room.
What they'd do if they'd got their hands on us I don't know. To judge by the posters attacking me and Rupert Murdoch, part of the "hate media" vilified by this Government -now Andrew has implanted the second programming spell trying to connect this protest to the ALP, this time, presenting himself & Rupert as innocent victims & but, tries to shift the blame in the readers mind to Julia Gillard because it is an opportunity for him to push his desire for a change of government, and the fact that he is happy to tell an outright lie to his readers is indicative of who he is-, it might have been uncomfortable.
But Lord Mayor Robert Doyle later told me what they'd done to him outside.
They'd stopped his car, let down its tyres, sat on its roof, hammered on the windows and screamed obscenities at him.
Dealing with protesters is part and parcel of political life, and Doyle wasn't actually stressed out by the protest at all, but, sold himself as the victim for the media because apart from these arrogant folk not liking attention and focus on their plans, it is a chance to 'show proof' of ALP misadventure & therefore advance the agenda against Gillard. If it had been a liberal government the protestors would have been abused and unceremoniously blamed with Bolt probably calling for the reintroduction of the iron maiden to deal with the jaywalking epidemic that is fermenting jihad and terrorism and being advanced by these violent protesters.

One woman waved an "Eat the Rich" sign at the ample Doyle, with an unnervingly hungry glint in her eye.
Is he inferring that this woman wanted to eat Doyle? Really? This is actually great fiction. How can he know this? Did he ask her?
Meanwhile, others with megaphones told latecomers to our function - the Institute of Public Affairs' 70th anniversary - it had been called off.
Good. so some good was achieved then.
Exactly what evil inside the NGV needed to be stamped out was hard to tell, but I suspect it was the kind of thing Communications Minister Stephen Conroy and his Labor heavies have also tried to stop on Channel 10 and in the Murdoch newspapers.
Here Andrew describes his ignorance about the reasons for the protest before apportioning blame to the ALP which is the third attempt at programming people about the ALP being to blame for this protest.
You know, like talking. Debating. Criticising. Questioning the Left's assumptions.
Yes, I mean the kind of thing this astonishingly authoritarian Government has tried to limit by proposing state control of the media, holding an inquiry into newspaper bias, bullying media executives and trying to make it unlawful to offend even people's political views.
Talking. The new enemy of the Left.
He is playing the left/right card as if there is a discernible difference between the ALP and the Liberal Party.
So what kind of talk were these protesters trying to stop?
Well, at the very moment I saw the mob trying to reach us I was talking to the impressive new Opposition Leader of South Australia, Stephen Marshall, about how to put more workers into jobs. How to make life easier for people by, say, cutting power bills.
Bolt is claiming that he was earnestly in discussion with a Liberal Opposition Minister about how to help the average Joe which is his fourth attempt at programming people about the Liberal parties need for election, which is pretty much what this whole article is about.
I admit, this is dull stuff for most sane people apart from the bit where I advised Marshall to show his state was open for business by having himself filmed blowing up the first of his state's grotesquely expensive wind towers.
Sadly, Marshall's raised eyebrow tells me he will not start his premiership with such a satisfying bang, despite the international publicity I swear he'd attract.
For the rest of the night, here is what we talked about as fluoro-vested police and dark-suited men guarded the stage and the entrances.
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott told us to defend freedom -how very vague?, and to remember "much is expected from those to whom so much has been given"-Andrew is giving the impression that he is part of the movers and shakers in the Liberal Party which would adequately explain why he is so politically neutral in his articles-. We should also heed the injunction to "love your neighbour as you love yourself", which "is the foundation of our mercy".
Seriously. That is what he just said about a minister in the Howard Government. With the Children Overboard Scandal, Schappelle Corby, & David Hicks examples of "the foundation of (their) mercy".
Andrew really seems to have abandoned writing about the protest in favour of pumping up Tony Abbot's tyres in the fifth attempt at programming the reader in what is ostensibly a piece of liberal party advertising.
Murdoch, my boss, told us to help our citizens make "a better life for themselves and their families" in a "fair and just society" in which "opportunity is open to all - not just those at the top".
He attacked "crony capitalism" and anything that gave the impression "benefits are only for the already rich, well-connected and politically powerful".
If you are happy to swallow this, Andrew has a bridge in Sydney Harbour that he'd like to sell you. Nice how he describes his boss this way. Most people would disagree that Murdoch believes these things that Andrew has just attributed to him.
Shocking talk. See now why we wicked plotters needed guards to save us from the anger of the rent-a-mob?
See how the protesters are now a 'rent-a-mob'? How much were they paid and who paid them?
See why simply arguing against us was not enough? Why we had to be threatened, physically stopped and turned away?
Now he is trying to link Doyle's experience to himself, Abbot & Murdoch by the use of words like 'us' and 'we'.
Actually, I shouldn't exaggerate this protest. Really Andrew, you don't say? Mikiverse Politics contends that this whole article has been exaggerated- Every society has people so damaged or megalomaniacal that debate is their enemy.
His point is that the protesters and the ALP are "so damaged or megalomaniacal that debate is their enemy."
And these protesters helped us. As I said in my own speech, they reminded us the enemies of the Open Society had been with us since Plato and are with us still. Some are now ministers in the Gillard Government.
Many in the crowd, adrenalin still pumping from the push-and-shove, even seemed to feel more keenly that they, too, were foot-soldiers for freedom, and opened their wallets wider to help the IPA battle the Gillard authoritarians.
As the article winds down, Andrew attempts to both remind the reader of who is the hero and villain of this peace as well as imply that the protestors had shot themselves in the foot, and ultimately, the ALP, by inspiring these rich bastards to donate more to the IPA to help effect the change of government. He doesn't tell you that big business in Australia are largely subsidised in Australia, with the recent revelations that Liberal & ALP governments are subsidising Holden to the tune of ONE BILLION DOLLARS PLUS are a prescient reminder that both major parties are for rich Australia and against poor, working class and even middle Australia.
Indeed, one man who'd been confronted by protesters as he got out of his car was so enraged that he stumped up the biggest donation of the night, $25,000 to see the filming of my show.
Thanks, protesters. You've helped the IPA.
Only idiots protest or vote ALP is the message.
But, best of all, you've shown us all the naked face of intolerance, and reminded us today's street thugs too easily become the politicians who tomorrow steal our freedom.
Like the ones who this year tried to.

KOORIS' JAIL RISK HIGHER THAN REST OF POPULATION

The clothes and transportation may look different, but has anything really changed since 1788?
Peter Mickelburough, Herald Sun, and Mikiverse Politics in red, April 10, 2013.
THE imprisonment rate of Victorian Kooris has grown five times faster than for the rest of the population in the past decade.
Koori offenders are more likely to be violent, -i've witnessed more police violent offenders than Originie, why doesn't Murdoch get one of his journalists to write about that?- Would you not be a little pissed off if you were the victim of a military invasion that has continued unabated for two hundred and fifteen years??- with almost a third of those in the Magistrates' Court sentenced for acts intended to cause injury, -in other words, MORE THAN TWO THIRDS are in that court rort for non violent means, but even though it is actually twice the number for non-violent than violents acts, why does this Murdoch owned paper focus on violence? Are they trying to send a signal that Originie people are violent as part of the fear programming that they offer their readers???  compared with less than a quarter of non-Koori offenders.
Burglary offences are also more common among Koori offenders -Am i the only one thinking that these figures aren't calculating the theft and burglary of THIS LAND by white anglo criminals operating under charter?, but they are less likely to be sentenced for traffic, drug or deception offences.
More than two decades since Aboriginal deaths in custody first hit the headlines, a new report by the Sentencing Advisory Council reveals Kooris are 13.4 times more likely to be imprisoned than non-indigenous Victorians, up from 7.9 in 2002. THIS IS RACISM. IT HAS TO STOP.
The Comparing Sentencing Outcomes for Koori and non-Koori Adult Offenders in the Magistrates' Court of Victoria report concludes that while it was not possible to rule out racial discrimination in sentencing, it was feasible that outcomes were influenced by Koori over-representation in the juvenile justice system, and, in turn, the child welfare system. Yet this comparing sentences acronym don't appear to grasp that:
    1. Koori over-representation in the juvenile justice system
    2. Koori over-representation in the child welfare system, and
    3. racial discrimination in sentencing
Are all products of the same racist programming system.
Over-representation of Kooris in juvenile detention is even more pronounced than in adult jails, at more than 20 times the rate of other youths.
Council chairman Arie Freiberg said there were several causes for this over representation, most the likely result of the continued consequences of historical disadvantage. That is the nice way of saying GENOCIDE. Rape. Murder. Torture. Kidnapping. Theft.
Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service CEO Wayne Muir said many young Koori offenders had come straight out of the child-protection system, but Victoria recorded no evidence on the number of such youngsters or their problems, such as drug and alcohol use.

US ALARM AT 'COOLING' ON MARINES

BRENDAN NICHOLSON From: The Australian April 02, 2013
US marines outside of the Robertson Barracks in Darwin ahead of the arrival of 250 Marines tomorrow into Darwin
The plan is to build the rotations up to 1100 marines soon and to a 2500-strong taskforce, complete with ships and aircraft, some time after 2016. Picture: Kelly Barnes Source: The Australian
AS discussions continue on whether Australia will help the US share the cost of placing a fully equipped 2500-strong marines taskforce in Darwin, concern is growing that the Gillard government's enthusiasm for the plan is cooling.
US Defence officials have told Australian officials they are concerned about "slippage" in Canberra's support for the US pivot and the rotation of a force of marines through northern Australia.
The first rotation of about 250 marines spent several months training in Australia last year.
The second rotation is due to arrive this month, again about 250 strong. The plan is to build the rotations up to 1100 marines soon and to a 2500-strong taskforce, complete with ships and aircraft, some time after 2016.
It would train in the Top End for six months of the year.
Peter Jennings, a former senior Defence official who now heads the Australian Strategic Policy Institute think tank, writes in The Australian today that senior US officials in Washington and in think tanks that focus on Asian security have been puzzled by a perceived cooling of Australian support for increased defence co-operation.
At recent congressional committee hearings, US Pacific commander Admiral Samuel Locklear warned that US defence funding cuts could slow the push to rebalance its forces to the Asia-Pacific by reducing the number of military exercises that could be held and regional engagement generally.
Mr Jennings said that should be of great concern to Australian defence planners.
Admiral Locklear said the Indo-Asia-Pacific was the world's most militarised region and that challenges ranged from North Korea's third nuclear test to a proliferation of submarines, growing concerns about aggressive cyber intrusions and an increase in the use of improvised bombs in south and Southeast Asia.
Asked whether Australia would pay a share of the cost of deploying the US marines to Darwin, an Australian Defence Force spokesman said: "The deployment of US forces to Australia will be funded by the US and other costs will be paid for under existing legal, financial and logistics agreements and arrangements."
The spokesman said the Australian government had not yet made any decisions about the detailed arrangements for larger US Marine Corps rotations.
However, there was already considerable pressure from within congress for US allies to share the cost of the pivot.
At a congressional hearing last year, committee chairman J. Randy Forbes said the plan to redistribute the Marine Corps force from Okinawa, Japan, into the region represented a significant investment.
"Could you describe to me the current state of host nation discussions with regard to offsetting overall costs in Guam and Australia?" Mr Forbes asked US officials.
The officials told Mr Forbes it was premature to talk about cost-sharing because they did not yet know what the deployments would cost.
"As yet we do not know the extent of the infrastructure needed or required for our presence and what Australia has to offer, and what we are looking to do."

WIKILEAKS TO RELEASE MORE US DOCUMENTS

  • AAP April 08, 2013

WikiLeaks is to publish more than 1.7 million US diplomatic documents, Julian Assange says. Source: AAP
WHISTLEBLOWING website WikiLeaks is to publish more than 1.7 million US diplomatic and intelligence documents from the 1970s, founder Julian Assange says.
The website has collated a variety of records including cables, intelligence reports and congressional correspondence and is releasing them in a searchable form on Monday.
Assange has carried out much of the work from his refuge in Ecuador's embassy in London and told the Press Association that the records highlighted the "vast range and scope" of US influence around the world.
The Australian has been holed up in the tiny diplomatic mission for nine months as he seeks to avoid extradition to Sweden over allegations of rape and sexual assault, which he denies.
WikiLeaks sent shockwaves around the diplomatic world in 2010 when it released a set of more than 250,000 leaked US cables.
The new records, dating from the beginning of 1973 to the end of 1976, have not been leaked and are available to view at the US national archives. They include many communications which were sent by or to then US secretary of state Henry Kissinger.
Many of the documents, which WikiLeaks has called the Public Library of US Diplomacy (PlusD), are marked NODIS (no distribution) or Eyes Only, while others were originally marked as secret.
Assange said WikiLeaks had undertaken a detailed analysis of the communications, adding that the information eclipsed Cablegate, a set of more than 250,000 US diplomatic cables published by WikiLeaks from November 2010 and over the following year.
Assange fled to the Ecuadorian embassy in June after losing his battle in the British courts against extradition to Sweden.
Ecuador granted him asylum in August but Britain has refused to allow him safe passage out of the country, sparking a diplomatic stalemate.
Assange founded the WikiLeaks website that enraged Washington by releasing cables and war logs relating to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in one of the biggest security breach in US history.

'BEAR' JOINS VIC POLICE FORCE WITH A GROWL

AAP April 11, 2013

VICTORIA POLICE will be able to run over many lawful protesters with this violent tool.
A NEW high-tech armoured rescue vehicle has been added to Victoria's crime-fighting artillery, helping police tackle terrorism and get a grip on dangerous scenarios.
The $400,000 "BearCat" vehicle, imported from the United States, will be used for sieges, armed stand-offs and in dealing with dangerous criminals.
"It is bullet resistant, blast resistant and it means Victorian police have up-to-date modern vehicles to use in a dangerous and hostile situation," Police Minister Kim Wells said on Thursday as he grabbed the keys for the armoured beast.
Federal Emergency Management Minister Mark Dreyfus said the vehicle could also be used for counter-terrorism and rescue operations.
Police are thrilled with the new tool in their arsenal.
Deputy Police Commissioner Tim Cartwright said the BearCat is carefully designed to protect police against armed offenders.
"(When) our guys are in this, they are protected from armed offenders and they get a greater opportunity to rescue people who are in need," he said.
The first BearCat vehicles were supplied to the ACT, the Northern Territory and South Australia mid-2011, as part of a national counter-terrorism committee project and will be provided to every state and territory.
This is what terrorists look like in the twenty first century
